January 18, 2018 - Living Dock Project

On Jan. 17, 2018, Dr. Kelli Hunsucker, and Dr. Robert Weaver, Indian RiverLagoon Research Institute (IRLRI), http://research3.fit.edu/irlri/living-dock/ made a very exciting presentation at the LHC clubhouse. The IRLRI is formed of a group of more than 20 faculty members from Florida Institute of Technology with decades of scientific research experience in the IRL. They have come together to develop solutions for improving water quality of the IRL. One of their projects is to create Living Docks, in an effort to improve the Lagoon water quality. The most recent community Living Dock was made at the Melbourne Beach town pier at the end of Ocean Ave., near Ryckman Park. One hundred oyster wraps were wrapped around underwater pilings.
The IRLRI data explains that if only 37 pilings were wrapped with oyster wraps averaging 32 oysters per wrap, a healthy Living Dock can potentially filter 57000 gallons of water per day! This is because one adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons per day. This is equivalent to about 21 million gallons of water per year per dock.
A Living Dock is made of oyster wraps attached to under water dock pilings. The method is simple, inexpensive, and needs virtually no maintenance. The wraps are attached to pilings under water and do not intrude with the beauty of our community. The team presented the scientific research to inform us of how this can be done and the benefits for the water quality of the Lagoon right in our neighborhood.
We have chosen to make a Living Dock right here at Lighthouse Cove. The F.I.T. team, along with volunteers from our community can easily complete this task in less than a day’s time. We would require a minimum of 20 wraps in our neighborhood. The cost for each wrap is $20. Please show your support and adopt a piling. Make a check for $20 payable to Florida Institute of Technology (with IRLRI in the memo) . Of course any amount you feel able to contribute is welcome. This donation is tax deductible. Tax ID: 59-6046500 F.I.T. 150 W University Blvd, Melbourne FL 32901
Cindy Pennington (732-580-5425), Unit 176, will collect all donations. Please give your check to Cindy no later than Sunday, January 21, 2018. Once we reach the $400 minimum, she will alert the community and make plans to complete the project.
April 18, 2015 Oyster project update:
You may notice the cages housing our young oysters are gone from the pier. On Saturday, April 18, 2015, these adolescent oysters became part of pilot reefs established off of the shoreline of Scout Island, Long Point Park.
Through the efforts of more than 800 volunteers throughout Brevard County, one million gardened oysters have been added to pilot reefs in three different locations of Brevard County. Two locations in the northern part of the county, and the Long Point Park location in the southern part of Brevard County.

The pilot reefs are being monitored quarterly by biologists, staff, and students from University of Central Florida (UCF). The data collected from the reefs will be used to determine the best means for maintaining the reefs until they continue to grow as nature had established them more than 100 years ago.

The zoo has applied for monies from Amendment 1, in the hopes to continue this project. We would then expect to receive new spat in late September and continue to garden the oysters through the spring of 2016 so reefs could be expanded next year.

Thanks to Ted Cooper, Carlene Waszkiewicz, and Mary Brown for their continual assistance with this meaningful project. We hope that the combined efforts of the Brevard Zoo, UCF, and the many county volunteers, that over the years we will see our lagoon in a much cleaner state.

I was fortunate enough to assist with the reef building. Please go to this link to see how the pilot reefs are established:

Oyster Gardening Project at Lighthouse Cove 2014
Some of the benefits provided are:
•Water quality improvement
•Habitat for over 300 different species
•Help restore natural population levels of oysters to the lagoon
Here is a document link to a 22 slide presentation that explains the problems that have led to Brevard County seeking and receiving a grant to HELP SAVE THE INDIAN RIVER LAGOON!
Cindy Pennington and Arabella Lewis, along with persons from 99 other communities in Brevard County, received the oysters on Feb. 22, 2014. On March 26, 2014, Sammy Anderson and Kirk Fusco, from Brevard Zoo visited these initial oyster gardening locations to count the oysters. The following day, they informed us that we have more oysters thriving and doing the work to filter the lagoon than any of the initial 100 involved communities. We now have 529 living & growing oysters, we measure the size of 100 of those oysters every other week and find they are doubling their size every two weeks! We clean & maintain the cages every Saturday morning. This is very exciting news!
9/15/14 Update - Thanks to Ted & Tim Cooper and Mary Brown for they have been caring for the oyster babies all summer long. We have close to 2000 thriving young oysters, many of them are young adolescents. Many thanks to all making this a successful LHC community project. The plan is that in November these oysters will be used to restore an oyster reef.
